First Ebola case diagnosed in France: Patient recovered and discharged from hospital

Paris – 04.07.2026: French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist confirmed on Saturday the recovery of the first Ebola patient diagnosed in France. The man, a doctor working in humanitarian aid, returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo on June 23 and tested positive shortly thereafter. After treatment in a specialized unit, he has now been discharged from the hospital. Authorities stress that all prescribed infection-control protocols were applied and that contact tracing is being continued.

The case became public at the end of June. Immediately afterwards the health authorities implemented isolation measures, identified fellow travelers as close contacts and placed them under observation. According to current information there is no indication of secondary transmission in France. Returnees from affected regions are still advised to self-monitor and to report immediately if symptoms such as fever, headache or gastrointestinal complaints occur.

Ebola is a rare but severe viral haemorrhagic disease with high mortality without adequate care. France has high-security isolation units in several referral hospitals as well as standardized protocols for transport, diagnostics, treatment and waste management. The patient’s discharge now shows that the care chain – from clinical suspicion through laboratory diagnostics to therapy – worked in this particular case. Nevertheless, experts warn to remain vigilant with travelers returning from outbreak areas.

French authorities point to a spread in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that has been observed by international organizations since May. Imported isolated cases cannot be completely ruled out given global mobility. Coordinated procedures between airports, regional health authorities, emergency services and national reference centers are all the more important. The Health Ministry coordinates the information situation with international partners and updates action recommendations for hospitals and emergency services as needed.

To the public the government emphasizes that there is no increased risk for the general population. Travelers to affected regions are asked to check travel advisories before departure and to watch for symptoms after returning. Health facilities have strengthened hygiene measures, training on handling suspected cases and clear reporting channels. Contact tracing in France remains active until the respective observation periods have expired. With upcoming holiday and travel seasons in mind, authorities appeal for vigilance without causing panic: prevention, rapid reporting and structured procedures are the most important tools to detect potential imported cases early and prevent transmission.
