Appeal judgment on Marine Le Pen on 07.07.2026: decision with symbolic effect for the 2027 presidency

Paris – 05.07.2026: The Paris appeals chamber will announce on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, its verdict in the trial against Marine Le Pen. The question is whether the former leader of the Rassemblement National, after the disqualification from holding elected office imposed in March 2025, regains political capacity or whether the sanction is confirmed. At first instance Le Pen was found guilty in connection with fictitious assistant positions at the EU level; the sentence included, among other things, five years of disqualification from holding elected office, which was initially ordered to be enforced immediately.

In the appeal proceedings held in early 2026 the evidence and legal considerations were reassessed. The public prosecutor requested several years of disqualification and other penalties, but did not entirely forgo seeking immediate enforcement. The chamber is not bound by those requests. Confirmations, mitigations or suspension of enforcement are possible. Another is preparing the transition to Jordan Bardella, who for weeks has presented himself as capable of carrying the campaign and harshly criticizes the judiciary’s actions. In both scenarios the party would have to decide in the short term on program leadership, campaign financing and alliances on the right in order to remain operational ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Beyond the individual case, the verdict raises questions of principle: how are criminal sanctions articulated with electoral law and the timelines of the presidential calendar? What role do possible additional appeals and review by higher instances play? Observers expect the written reasoning to provide clarity on the determination of the penalty, the requirements for immediate enforcement and its practical consequences for mandate and candidacy rights.

The decision of the appeals chamber therefore has immediate consequences for the party’s staffing planning, for the balance of forces in the right-wing spectrum and for the pace of the year leading up to the election. Regardless of the outcome, the verdict will readjust the national strategy: either the RN will have to structure the presidential deployment without Le Pen, or it will retain—at least provisionally—the option of entering the decisive phase with its best-known figure.
