Appeal Ruling on July 7: Court Decides on Marine Le Pen's Ineligibility

Paris – 07.07.2026: The Cour d’appel de Paris will decide this Tuesday on the appeals in the proceedings concerning allegedly improperly employed parliamentary assistants in the orbit of the Rassemblement National. In first instance Marine Le Pen was sentenced to a suspended prison term, a substantial fine and five years of ineligibility. The pending ruling will clarify whether the sentence is confirmed in full, in part, or not at all, and whether any ineligibility takes effect immediately.

There is a great deal at stake politically. If an ineligibility of more than two years is confirmed, Le Pen would be de facto out of the running for the 2027 presidency. Within the RN, Jordan Bardella is considered the designated lead candidate in that scenario. Internal party discussions have for months focused on transitional mechanisms to enable a rapid pivot in the campaign if Le Pen is legally sidelined. Bardella has recently been appearing increasingly independently and testing formats in which he assumes both programmatic leadership and candidate visibility.

The past five months have been marked within the party by nervousness and organizational precaution. Strategists commissioned polls with alternative leading figures to assess the impact on undecided voters and the centrist-conservative electorate. RN supporters are divided between loyalty to the long-standing symbolic figure and a desire for planning security. Observers point out that the ruling could also shift the balance of power within the French right, particularly with regard to alliances in upcoming electoral cycles.

Legally the situation is complex. Under French electoral and criminal law, ineligibilities can — depending on the wording and any ordered provisional enforcement — have immediate political consequences. Legal commentators emphasize that the written reasoning of the judgment will be decisive, for example for possible appeals or requests to suspend certain parts of the sanctions. The question of whether and how a potential ineligibility applies to different levels of mandate is also likely to be clarified in the written opinion.

For the day of the decision, media organizations are preparing extended special broadcasts; statements from political and judicial circles are expected at short notice. Party sources say the RN intends to announce its lines for the presidential primary campaign immediately after the verdict — depending on the outcome, with Le Pen remaining a central figure or with Bardella officially declared as the candidate. One thing is clear: today’s ruling will largely determine the tempo and composition of the 2027 campaign.
