Gendarmerie warns of an increase in thefts at motorway rest areas

Paris – 07.07.2026: Just in time for the peak season, the Gendarmerie nationale is warning of an increase in thefts and acts of vandalism at rest areas and parking lots along French motorways. According to several reports, heavily used holiday routes are particularly affected; an increase in reports is being recorded from northern to southern France. The A7, A9 and A10 sections are cited in particular, where quick thefts from unlocked or briefly opened vehicles are occurring increasingly often.

The modus operandi is often the same: during short breaks, windows are left slightly open, trunks remain only loosely closed, or bags are visible on the passenger seat. The perpetrators act within seconds, usually without leaving signs of forced entry. In some cases, victims also report searched interiors and damaged doors when the vehicle was locked. Investigators are examining possible links in some areas between individual incidents and groups operating itinerantly, but emphasize that many crimes are facilitated by carelessness.

The authorities are focusing on prevention and presence. Motorway operators and traffic police have stepped up patrols and surveillance points, while the Gendarmerie is announcing targeted checks at road junctions. Travelers should keep valuables out of sight, cover luggage in the trunk, and fully lock vehicles even for brief visits to service areas. Anyone staying near the vehicle should remain alert and avoid leaving several doors or windows open at the same time.

For criminal classification purposes, the incidents are generally recorded as petty theft or property damage. According to investigators, reports are essential: they provide an overview of the situation, help set priorities for targeted measures and, if recurring patterns emerge, make it possible to link the incidents to groups of perpetrators. The Gendarmerie recommends attaching receipts, photos and a detailed list of stolen items and, if necessary, immediately calling emergency number 17.

In practical terms, it is advisable to choose stops in advance: well-lit areas with visible cameras or locations near service stations and shops. Important documents, identification and payment cards should be carried on one’s person rather than left in the vehicle; spare keys should be stored separately. Anyone carrying significant amounts of cash should consider whether it is necessary or use alternative solutions. For family trips, the authorities recommend assigning clear responsibilities: one person stays near the car while the others go to the restrooms or shops.

Until then, the rule is: remain vigilant, follow instructions from the local Gendarmerie and promptly report suspicious observations. This can significantly reduce risks during the journey to the holiday destination without unnecessarily complicating the departure.
