Paris – 07.07.2026: The Paris criminal chamber will announce the appeals verdict on Tuesday in the affair over allegedly misused European Parliament funds by the former Front National, today Rassemblement National (RN). At its core the case concerns the employment of assistants between 2004 and 2016: investigators and the prosecution allege that salaries from Brussels budgets were used to finance party-political activities in France. In the first instance in 2025 several defendants, including Marine Le Pen, were convicted. She denies the allegations and appealed.
Politically, today’s date is explosive. If the appellate court confirms significant convictions and imposes ineligibility, it would directly affect the presidential strategy for 2027. Legally, however, the road would not necessarily end there: a cassation appeal is possible, which is limited to legal questions and can take months. The question of when any potential ineligibility would take effect also depends on service, further appeals and the exact wording of the decision.
Within the RN the pressure for a clear division of roles is growing. Party leader Jordan Bardella holds the presidency and regularly represents the party in national campaigns. Observers outline several scenarios: from a short-term dual leadership to a transitional solution for the European and regional election cycle, up to a definitive top candidacy by Bardella for 2027 if Le Pen were legally barred. At the same time, voices from the wider party and allied ranks say they want to wait for the judgment to avoid prematurely intensifying internal power struggles.
The defense insists that the employees in question actually performed parliamentary duties, such as research, editorial work and voter contact within the framework of EU mandates. The prosecution counters that many activities were organizationally and substantively attributable to the party apparatus in France. Earlier decisions in similar cases are cited by both sides, but they do not provide a clear template for the individual responsibility now to be examined or for the level of possible sanctions.
Beyond the individual case, the proceedings also shift the strategic landscape for rivals in the center and on the left. Compromised senior personnel at the RN could influence coalition calculations in municipalities and regions as well as the issue weighting of the 2026/27 election campaigns – for example on law and order, purchasing power or European policy orientation. Regardless of the outcome, it should be noted: today’s judgment will provide short-term clarity on the legal situation of Marine Le Pen, while the ultimate political effect will depend on the next legal and party decisions.
