Racist Attack on Mbappé: Affair Involving Paraguayan Senator Sparks Diplomatic Reactions

Paris – 07.07.2026: After the round of 16 match France–Paraguay on July 4, 2026, an openly racist online attack by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla on Kylian Mbappé sparked a political affair. The politician posted several derogatory expressions on the platform X that were directed at the captain of the French national team. Within hours, the incident escalated from a sport-related controversy to a diplomatically charged debate.

Mbappé reacted immediately and called Amarilla “a despicable woman, unworthy of her office”. In France there was widespread solidarity: President Emmanuel Macron, members of the government and the Fédération Française de Football (FFF) condemned the statements and offered support to the player. The FFF announced it would consider legal action. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also declared the remarks “unambiguously” racist and demanded respect for players and officials at international tournaments.

The government of Paraguay distanced itself from the senator’s words in a statement. Parliamentary circles in Asunción said they would discuss possible disciplinary or parliamentary measures. Whether formal steps will be taken depends on the internal rules of the Senate and the relevant national laws. At the same time, lawyers are debating to what extent civil or criminal proceedings are possible—either in Paraguay or, where permissible, in other jurisdictions. This touches on issues of immunity for officeholders, freedom of expression and cross-border jurisdiction for online statements.

Politically, the case highlights the responsibility of elected representatives for their communication on social networks. Platforms like X are again under pressure to moderate hate speech more quickly and to intervene consistently when content is clearly discriminatory. In France, experts point to existing tools against racist agitation; in Latin America similar debates are underway about the balance between political speech and effective sanctions for discrimination.

Beyond the individual case, the affair shows how closely sport and politics are intertwined in globally observed tournaments. National sensitivities can turn into personal attacks after heated games and trigger international reactions within minutes. The support for Mbappé in France and the distancing by the Paraguayan executive branch signal that racist outbursts against prominent athletes are not mere private remarks but can have political consequences. What measures the Paraguayan Senate ultimately adopts and whether legal steps across national borders have a prospect of success remain the subject of ongoing deliberations.
