Gendarmerie nationale warns of an increase in thefts at motorway rest areas

According to several police stations, particularly busy holiday routes are affected, with more reports being filed from northern to southern France. In particular, there has been an increase in cases on the A7, A9 and A10 where items are quickly stolen from unlocked or temporarily open vehicles.

The method is often the same: during a short break, a window is left slightly open, the trunk is not fully closed, or bags are left visibly on the passenger seat. Perpetrators take items within seconds and in most cases leave no signs of forced entry. There are also reports of vehicles being ransacked or doors damaged even when they were locked. Investigators are examining links between individual incidents and mobile groups in some regions, but stress that many crimes are caused by carelessness.

Authorities are focusing on prevention and presence. Motorway operators and traffic police are increasing patrols and surveillance camera coverage, while the Gendarmerie nationale has announced intensified checks at key locations. Travelers are asked to ensure valuables are removed from view, conceal luggage in the trunk, and fully lock their vehicles even when leaving them only briefly. Remain alert even when near the car, and do not leave several doors or windows open at the same time.

Under criminal classification, these incidents are often treated as “petty theft” or “property damage.” Reports are important for investigators, helping them assess the situation, prioritize targeted measures, and identify criminal groups when patterns emerge. The Gendarmerie nationale advises attaching receipts, photographs, and a detailed list of stolen items, and urges people to immediately call emergency number “17” in suspicious situations.

In practical terms, it is recommended to choose stopping places in advance. Locations that are well lit and have visible cameras, or are close to petrol stations or shops, are preferable. Do not leave important documents, identification, or payment cards in the vehicle; keep them on your person, and store spare keys separately. If carrying large amounts of cash, reconsider whether it is necessary or use alternatives. For family trips, authorities advise clear divisions of responsibility, such as one person remaining with the vehicle while others go to the toilet or shop.
