Despite Conviction: Le Pen Supporters in Hénin-Beaumont and Amilly Reaffirm Support

Hénin-Beaumont – 08.07.2026: A few hours after her conviction in the appeal proceedings in the affair over the employment of European parliamentary assistants, Marine Le Pen reaffirmed her candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. The Cour d’appel de Paris reportedly upheld substantial parts of the findings of guilt and imposed a reduced but incisive sanction. According to published minutes, the judgment includes conditions up to and including electronic monitoring. At the same time Le Pen remains legally eligible to stand, which immediately shapes her party’s political course.

In Hénin-Beaumont, a stronghold of the Rassemblement National, as well as in central French Amilly, supporters presented a demonstratively united front at local meetings, conversations and spontaneous gatherings. From municipal officeholders to long-standing campaigners, many spoke of being “not discouraged” and saw the candidacy as a signal of continuity. At the same time caution is palpable among some supporters: the conviction forces the party to secure organizational and legal details early in order to remain operational in the election year.

Politically the RN faces a dual task: it must defend the credibility of its leading candidate while planning a campaign that takes potential restrictions from conditions into account. Party leader Jordan Bardella is seen in this context as a key figure for public appearances, mobilization and the coordination of regional structures. Observers expect the RN to recalibrate its message between holding on to its core clientele and appealing to voters willing to switch. Opponents, meanwhile, point to the criminal dimension to sow doubts about Le Pen’s capacity to lead.

Legally the situation is not conclusively resolved. Experts point to potential remedies, for example before the Cour de cassation, as well as urgent proceedings to suspend individual enforcement modalities. It could be decisive to what extent conditions — if they indeed include electronic monitoring — practically affect the conduct of a nationwide campaign. The outcome of further instances may also influence the public climate and media dynamics.

Beyond France the case is being closely watched in Brussels, as it touches on fundamental questions about the use of EU funds and the oversight of parliamentary employment relationships. National campaign headquarters across the political spectrum are observing whether the RN can convert the attention into additional visibility or whether legal uncertainty constrains coalition and alliance options. In the short term intense reporting, a tight schedule of party events and a search for legal clarity are to be expected.
