Fleurance – 08.07.2026: In the investigation into the death of eleven-year-old Lyhanna from the Département Gers, records of the first police custody interrogation depict a pattern of highly variable statements by the main suspect, Jérôme Barella. The 41-year-old was arrested the day after the girl’s disappearance. According to consistent media reports, he changed his account of events several times during early interrogations in late May and diverted investigators with leads into side avenues that did not pan out. The Prosecutor’s Office of Auch spoke of statements that significantly hindered clarification of the case.
According to franceinfo and regional titles, Barella initially gave a brief account in which he denied any immediate responsibility. In further questionings he provided differing detailed narratives about timelines and locations. Investigators assessed some of the leads as deliberately misleading because they could not be reconciled with analyses of phone data and initial witness statements. From the investigative judges’ circle it is said that the back-and-forth early on gave the impression that the suspect wanted to influence the direction of the inquiries.
The case prompted a large outpouring of concern in southwestern France within days. After the missing-person report, the Gendarmerie and volunteers launched search operations in which numerous residents of Fleurance and surrounding communities participated. At the same time, technical analysis of mobile phone and video data began. On that basis, reports say, the focus quickly narrowed to the 41-year-old already known to police. Barella has since been charged with murder and rape; he is held in pre-trial detention. The defendant remains presumed innocent.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Auch is coordinating the investigation in cooperation with the Gendarmerie. Central tasks include the precise reconstruction of the child’s last known route, the verification of the contradictory statements, and possible earlier indications of violent behavior by the suspect. Media outlets also point to internal reviews into whether authorities followed up consistently on past warnings. Officially, investigators speak only cautiously so as not to jeopardize the progress of the inquiries.
The case once again sheds light on operational practice in early missing-person situations: investigators must promptly check statements against objective traces to intercept changes of trail and deploy search resources in a targeted manner. Victim protection also plays a role, for example in supporting relatives and in communicating the status of the investigation. When further results on the course of events and motive will be available, judicial circles say, depends on outstanding expert reports and interrogations.
