Rencontres d’Arles: Five discoveries in the lively Off of the festival

Arles – 09.07.2026: This July, photography unfolds across Arles like a map of the city, and the Off once again becomes a bustling laboratory of free formats. In addition to the 47 exhibitions in the official program, around 150 additional connected spaces – galleries, studios, courtyards, temporary venues – open up a panorama ranging from the documentary gaze to experimental image research.

The Off thrives on encounters and irregularities: where the Rencontres program offers curated routes, intimate discoveries emerge beyond them. Young galleries show series that tell big stories with simple means; photography collectives experiment with installation, sound, and projection in urban space; students turn back courtyards into laboratories of vision. This immediacy often remains in the memory longer than major retrospectives.

The dialogue between the “In” and the “Off” is productive. Retrospectives on decisive positions – such as the tribute to William Klein – bring historical depth to the festival.
