Rencontres d'Arles: Nine photobooks pay tribute to 200 years of photography

Arles – 10.07.2026: The Rencontres d’Arles inaugurate their programme for the bicentenary of photography with a strong emphasis on the photobook. Alongside exhibitions and meetings, the Arles Books Fair provides the resonant space in which new publications intertwine the history and present of the medium. Nine recent titles, which the festival highlights as central strands, show how the history of the invention extends into today’s practices and interpretations.

At the centre are the early moments: processes, equipment and historical visual strategies ranging from daguerreotypes to Talbot’s paper negatives. The presented volumes explain how they work precisely, while avoiding technological nostalgia. Instead, they ask about consequences and blind spots: which visual orders became politically effective through photography, who owns the archives, which histories are missing? In this way, the anniversary marks less a retrospective than a critical reading of images – and of their power to shape memory.

Several publications work with collections that have until now been scattered: family albums, colonial collections and regional studies. Curators and authors transparently comment on editorial interventions, make provenance visible and explore how reproductions alter interpretations. Essays connect scholarly perspectives with literary voices; image sequences are conceived as arguments, not merely as illustrations. Thus, the book becomes a site of engagement: it structures the gaze, imposes order, measure and distance.

Alongside thematic studies are artists’ books that regard design, paper, binding and sequence as part of the work. In Arles, this encounters a professional ecosystem: publishers, independent editions, the photobook award jury and the École nationale supérieure de la photographie. What is shown is a field oscillating between publishing, gallery and criticism – and one in which small print runs circulate just as much as future reference volumes. For collectors, libraries and institutions with photographic collections, the question of the canon arises anew: which titles will remain available, and which will fall into oblivion?
