A 17-year-old girl lost her life in a serious accident during the night from Thursday to Friday. According to information gathered so far, she had taken part in a spontaneous car procession and was standing at the back or on the bed of a truck that was part of the procession. While passing through a roundabout, she apparently lost her balance, fell from the vehicle and ended up under the wheels. Despite the rapid intervention of emergency services, all help came too late. The young woman died at the scene.
The exact circumstances of the accident are now the focus of the investigation. The truck driver was temporarily detained. The public prosecutor’s office has launched proceedings to fully clarify the course of the accident and examine any possible responsibility. Witness statements and technical investigations are now expected to shed light on how the fatal fall could have occurred.
At the time of the accident, several minors were in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle. One of the boys suffered severe shock and was taken to hospital in Maubeuge. The experience will likely have lasting effects on the friends and family members present.
While celebrations in the affected community abruptly turned into mourning, celebrations of the victory in the rest of France were largely peaceful. Numerous fans, especially in Paris, gathered on the Champs-Élysées and in other districts to celebrate their team’s success. Police reported only a few arrests.
