Iran and US Contradict Each Other Over End of Ceasefire After New Attacks

Tehran – 11/07/2026: Iran and the United States fundamentally differ in their assessment of the state of their ceasefire following new military attacks. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday that Tehran had so far honored its commitments. US President Donald Trump, by contrast, maintained his assertion that the truce was over. At the same time, both sides indicated that contacts over a diplomatic solution had not been completely severed.

The confrontations between Iranian and US forces had flared up again on Tuesday. According to consistent reports, the attacks exchanged since then were the most severe since the June 17 protocol. It was intended to open a lasting way out of the war that had begun after an Israeli-US attack on Iran on February 28.

Trump said on Friday that Washington had agreed to continue talks but considered the ceasefire to be over. He coupled this with the accusation that Tehran had initiated further communication. The Iranian Foreign Ministry rejected this account. A spokesperson said Iran had made no such request to the United States.

Araghchi was due to discuss the Strait of Hormuz in Oman on Saturday. The strait between Iran and Oman is a central point of contention because it is of major importance for energy supplies and international trade. Following the latest tensions, Tehran is allowing only a shipping corridor controlled from the Iranian coast and rejects a return to the previous transit rules.

The United States had held Iran responsible for attacks on three merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz and subsequently struck targets in the country on two consecutive nights. According to the available reports, Iran responded with attacks against Gulf states, including Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar. At least one person was reported injured in Kuwait.

Washington also reinstated economic sanctions on Iranian oil that had been suspended under the June 17 protocol. Araghchi described the move as a violation of the agreement. The conflicting assessments show that even the legal and political status of the truce between the parties to the conflict remains unresolved.

Several regional actors were recently considered for mediation talks. According to Iranian media reports, a delegation from Qatar arrived in Tehran as early as Friday. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also urged President Massoud Pezeshkian to preserve the opportunity for peace that had been achieved. Whether the talks in Oman would lead to a de-escalation remained unclear on Saturday.
