Paris – 11 July 2026: The first major summer holiday travel changeover placed heavy pressure on traffic on numerous French highways on Saturday. According to Franceinfo, traffic jams nationwide totaled nearly 1,000 kilometers at midday. The main outbound routes from the Paris region, as well as connections toward the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Alps, were particularly affected.
The traffic situation coincided with a period of exceptionally high temperatures. Météo-France again expected widespread temperatures above 35 degrees on Saturday. The highest warning level for extreme heat was in effect for 24 departments, while a significant risk level applied to another 59 departments. Highs of 36 to 37 degrees were also expected in Paris, Lyon, Nantes, Toulouse and Strasbourg.
Bison Futé had already warned of very heavy traffic ahead of the weekend. For Saturday, 11 July, conditions for holiday-bound traffic were classified as very difficult nationwide. In the greater Paris area, disruption was expected to concentrate early on the approaches to the toll plazas of the A6 and A10 motorways. Significant delays were also forecast on several long-distance routes.
The combination of slow-moving traffic and intense heat increases the risk of dehydration, circulatory problems and overheating inside vehicles. The Ministry of Transport advises travelers to avoid journeys between noon and 4 p.m. where possible, take sufficient water with them and drink regularly. Sunshades or protective films on rear windows can reduce the warming of the vehicle interior.
For families, older people and those with pre-existing health conditions, prolonged waits at service areas or in traffic jams are especially taxing. Drivers should therefore check their fuel or battery charge in good time, avoid parking the vehicle in direct sunlight, and never leave children or animals unattended in the car. If symptoms occur, a break in a safe location is necessary.
The exceptional heat follows an already extremely hot June. Météo-France classified June 2026, with a nationwide average temperature of 22.7 degrees, as the warmest June since records began. At the same time, the ongoing drought is increasing the risk of vegetation and forest fires, particularly in the south and southeast of the country.
The traffic outlook remains tense for the coming travel days because the public holiday on Tuesday, 14 July, gives many employees a long weekend. Before setting off, travelers should check current traffic reports and official weather warnings, plan breaks and adjust their route flexibly in the event of prolonged disruption.
