Major Fire in Fontainebleau: Investigators Examine Possible Arson

Noisy-sur-Ecole – 13 July 2026: An exceptionally large forest fire has affected the western part of the Fontainebleau forest in Seine-et-Marne. According to emergency services, around 800 hectares had been affected by Monday morning. The fire broke out late Sunday afternoon, 12 July, near the A6 motorway and spread rapidly under hot, dry and windy conditions.

More than 400 firefighters were deployed overnight; according to the Interior Ministry and media reports, two firefighting aircraft were additionally sent to the region. The scale of the operation is unusual for the Paris region. People were moved to safety from at-risk areas as a precaution. Traffic disruptions and temporary closures occurred around the A6 due to the proximity of further fire origins.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez visited the scene near Noisy-sur-Ecole on Monday. He said that around ten separate points of origin had been identified within a radius of approximately one kilometre. This finding suggested that a deliberate cause was possible. However, such an assessment does not replace a criminal determination: investigators must now establish whether the fires were set and what specific circumstances led to their outbreak.

The fire has struck a forest area of particular importance to the greater Paris region. The Fontainebleau massif covers around 23,000 hectares and lies approximately 60 kilometres southeast of the capital. It is at once a recreation area, a natural habitat and a heavily visited destination. Although the loss of 800 hectares represents only a limited share of the entire massif, it is considerable for the affected forest areas and their wildlife and plant life.

The event highlights the changing wildfire risk in northern France. State authorities recently classified Ile-de-France as a new risk area for vegetation fires. In April 2026, several municipalities in Seine-et-Marne and neighbouring Essonne were reclassified on the basis of wildfire risk. For the Fontainebleau, Trois-Pignons, Commanderie and Nemours-Poligny massif areas, this affects a combined area of around 20,000 hectares.

The high temperatures of recent days further increased the danger, but they do not explain the cause of the fire. According to the French government, nine out of ten forest and vegetation fires result from human activity. This can include negligence as well as deliberate conduct. In the specific case of Fontainebleau, no publicly confirmed information has yet been released regarding suspects or a possible motive.

For the authorities, the operation is therefore becoming a test of their wildfire strategy, strengthened since 2023: prevention, early warning, coordinated command and the deployment of national aerial resources are intended to be effective even outside the traditional fire regions of southern France. The immediate priority is the complete containment of the fire. Only afterwards will it be possible to reliably assess the extent of the ecological damage and the cause.
