Forest fire near Fontainebleau: hundreds evacuated after a dramatic night

Fontainebleau – 14 July 2026: The major fire in the Fontainebleau forest, southeast of Paris, spread fear among numerous residents of neighboring municipalities during the night on Monday. People living near the edge of the forest had to leave their homes in a hurry after the fire spread rapidly. Accounts from those affected describe how the flames came dangerously close to the properties within minutes.

Localities on the edge of the forest area were particularly affected, including Noisy-sur-École, Le Vaudoué and Achères-la-Forêt. The evacuations were carried out as a precaution to prevent residents from being exposed to smoke, sparks or a possible spread of the fire. According to consistent reports, around 900 people were brought to safety. As of Monday afternoon, no injuries or destroyed homes had been reported.

The fire broke out on Sunday, 12 July, and continued through the night. By Monday, the fire had already affected around 800 hectares of forest. The prefect of Seine-et-Marne stated in the afternoon that the fire was not yet under control, although it was spreading more slowly. Emergency teams focused their work on protecting inhabited areas and major transport routes.

At times, up to 850 firefighters were deployed. They received extensive aerial support, including water bombers and helicopters. For the Île-de-France region, this operation was exceptional, as water bombers are rarely used there. Water was drawn from the Seine, among other sources, to support the aerial firefighting effort.

For residents, the night was marked above all by uncertainty. Some had to leave their homes without knowing whether they would be able to return soon. Authorities organized accommodation and accompanied the evacuations with police, firefighters and other emergency services. The return to certain areas depended on the development of the fire front and safety inspections on site.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez visited the operational area on Monday. He praised the work of the emergency services and stated that the cause of the fire would be investigated. Indications of possible arson were mentioned publicly, although no final assessment had yet been made. The investigation and technical analysis of the fire site are ongoing.

The fire highlights the particular vulnerability of the large forest massif during periods of dry and hot weather. In the coming days, it will be crucial to determine whether smoldering hotspots can be completely extinguished and whether wind or high temperatures create new dangers. Operations command is maintaining its measures while the affected municipalities gradually prepare for the return of their residents.
