Forest fire near Fontainebleau: Hundreds evacuated after dramatic night

Fontainebleau – 14 July 2026: A major fire in the Fontainebleau forest southeast of Paris on Monday night alarmed numerous residents of neighboring communities. People living near the edge of the forest had to urgently leave their homes after the fire spread rapidly. Eyewitnesses reported that the flames came dangerously close to properties within minutes.

Communities on the edge of the forest area were particularly affected, including Noisy-sur-École, Le Vaudoué and Achères-la-Forêt. The evacuation was carried out as a precaution to avoid exposing residents to danger from smoke, sparks or a possible spread of the fire. According to coordinated reports, around 900 people were brought to safety. As of Monday evening, no injuries or destroyed homes had been reported.

The fire broke out on Sunday, 12 July, and continued through the night. By Monday, the blaze had already consumed around 800 hectares of forest. The prefect of the Seine-et-Marne department stated during the day that the fire was not yet under control, but was spreading more slowly. Emergency services focused on protecting residential areas and important transport routes.

At one point, up to 850 firefighters were involved in fighting the blaze. They were supported by substantial aerial resources, including firefighting aircraft and helicopters. For the Île-de-France region, the operation was considered exceptional, as firefighting aircraft are only rarely used there. Water was drawn from the Seine, among other sources, to support aerial firefighting efforts.

For residents, the night primarily meant uncertainty. Some had to leave their homes without knowing whether they would be able to return quickly. Authorities organized accommodation for evacuees and supervised the evacuation with the involvement of police, firefighters and other emergency services. Returns to individual areas depended on the development of the fire front and on-site safety checks.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez visited the operational area on Monday. He praised the work of emergency responders and said that the cause of the fire would be investigated. Publicly mentioned indications pointed to possible deliberate arson, but no final assessment had yet been made. The investigation and technical analysis of the fire site are ongoing.

The fire demonstrates the particular vulnerability of the large forest area during periods of dry and hot weather. In the coming days, the key issue will remain whether smoldering hotspots can be fully extinguished and whether wind or high temperatures could create new threats. The operation command continues to take measures, while the affected communities gradually prepare for the return of their residents.
