Fontainebleau – 14 July 2026: The smell of smoke still hangs over the charred pines and dusty paths of the Fontainebleau forest massif. While emergency crews secure the fire sites, the justice system has expanded its investigation: six people are in police custody, according to the Fontainebleau public prosecutor’s office. This is significantly higher than the number initially announced on Tuesday.
Those arrested include a volunteer firefighter. According to the public prosecutor’s office, he is said to have admitted setting fire to branches in Arbonne-la-Forêt using a lighter and petrol. What criminal consequences may follow remains unclear. An admission during questioning neither replaces further gathering of evidence nor a court decision. The investigation is being conducted under the direction of the Fontainebleau public prosecutor’s office.
According to media reports, another man is also said to have admitted a connection to an attempted fire-setting. In the case of the remaining people, investigators are still examining whether and to what extent they may have been involved in individual fire outbreaks. The authorities have not published a final account of the possible sequence of events. All those concerned are presumed innocent until a final conviction.
The extensive investigation was prompted by several fires that have affected the area on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest in Seine-et-Marne since 12 July 2026. According to the Gendarmerie, access routes were closed off, vulnerable areas monitored and residents evacuated from threatened zones. Officers are also assisting the fire service in securing operational areas and carrying out checks on access roads.
A farmer told Franceinfo that he had observed one of the later suspects in a situation that had seemed unusual to him. His account is one possible piece of the puzzle, but not evidence in itself. Especially in the case of a major fire involving numerous witnesses, emergency vehicles and rumours, it is crucial to carefully distinguish between observation, suspicion and established fact.
The fires have affected large parts of one of the region’s best-known forest areas. Emergency crews from several services were deployed; firefighting aircraft and helicopters also supported the operation. On Tuesday, media reported that the two major fire fronts were under control. However, this does not mean that the danger has completely passed: smouldering hotspots, wind and dry vegetation may continue to complicate the situation.
For people around Fontainebleau, beyond the loss of forested areas, the main question remains how the fires could have started. The investigation must now determine whether individual incidents are connected and whether other causes played a role. Until then, hasty accusations are inappropriate – including towards the people helping in the forest and along the roads these days.
