Checks on the Water: Gendarmerie Targets Risky Holiday Trips

France – 14/07/2026: On the water, a summer day often begins with the roar of outboard engines and the sparkle of the coast. For the Gendarmerie, however, the holiday season also means more deployments. A recent report draws attention to risky behavior by recreational boat operators and jet ski riders that can endanger other water sports enthusiasts, swimmers and crews.

The focus is not on harmless mistakes while docking, but on violations that may pose a danger: high speeds in unsuitable areas, jet ski trips in prohibited zones, and alcohol or drug use on boats. Officers therefore check licenses, vessel documents and the required safety equipment. Driving behavior and distance from swimming areas are also part of their remit.

The maritime Gendarmerie and coastal surveillance brigades are responsible for far more than individual traffic checks. They carry out maritime police duties, pursue environmental and fisheries violations, and can investigate incidents of criminal relevance. These tasks become more concentrated during the summer months, as excursion boats, water sports equipment, commercial shipping and bathers share limited space.

A recently published account by the Toulon Gendarmerie describes these operations as an established part of daily life during the season. There, coastal officers inspect recreational and commercial vessels in the roadstead off the port city. For water sports such as jet skiing, stand-up paddling, kayaking or towed water sports equipment, they pay particular attention to rules intended to prevent collisions and serious accidents.

The checks are primarily preventive. However, anyone operating a boat must not wait until rough seas or an emergency to take responsibility. Safety equipment, navigation rules and the necessary documents are not minor matters. In an emergency, they determine whether help can arrive in time and whether other people on the water are protected. Special licensing requirements also apply to motorized vessels at sea.

The current report provides no reliable nationwide figure on how many violations have already been identified this summer. Nor were specific cases or the names of people allegedly involved mentioned. No general conclusion can therefore be drawn about individual coastal locations. What is clear, however, is that authorities are visibly relying on presence, checks and enforcement of existing safety regulations during the holiday season.

For holidaymakers, the message remains straightforward: the sea is not a lawless amusement park. Anyone using a jet ski or motorboat must respect restricted areas, adjust their speed and remain sober. Behind every check is also an effort to prevent the brief moment when recklessness becomes an accident – and a holiday outing becomes an operation for rescue crews and investigators.
