Palestinian organizations launch a campaign on sexual violence in Israeli prisons

Ramallah – 14 July 2026: Palestinian organizations representing detainees and former prisoners have launched an international campaign in Ramallah against sexual violence during Israeli detention. The organizers intend to document the testimonies of those affected, provide legal assistance, and promote investigations. The initiative is motivated by accounts from former detainees regarding abuse during interrogations and periods of detention. The allegations concern facilities of the Israeli military, police, and prison administration.

According to the organizers, several Palestinian human rights and prisoner associations are participating in the initiative. They are calling for an end to impunity and for independent investigations. The campaign primarily pursues a documentary and political objective: individual testimonies are to be systematically collected and made accessible to international institutions. On Tuesday, the organizers did not present a publicly verifiable total number of alleged victims.

However, the allegations are not isolated. The latest annual report by the UN Secretary-General on conflict-related sexual violence notes that in 2025 the United Nations verified several cases of sexualized violence against Palestinian men, women, and minors. According to the report, the violations occurred mainly during detention and interrogations. Military camps, prisons run by the Israeli prison administration, and a police station are cited.

The UN documented violence against 14 men, seven women, nine boys, and one girl from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. These figures refer to individual verified cases and do not allow direct conclusions to be drawn about the actual overall extent of possible abuse. At the same time, the report emphasizes that those affected are often unable to speak about the mistreatment due to threats, lack of access to legal assistance, and the particular dependency involved in detention.

Israel has repeatedly rejected similar allegations, describing them as unfounded or politically motivated. In previous statements, the Israeli prison administration said that detainees are treated and receive medical care in accordance with applicable law. In March 2026, the Israeli military judiciary closed proceedings against five soldiers accused of abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman military camp. The UN Special Rapporteur on torture subsequently called for clarification of this decision.

Under international law, torture, rape, and any other form of sexual violence against prisoners are prohibited without exception. The political effectiveness of the new campaign will therefore depend on its ability to collect solid evidence in addition to testimonies, and on whether Israeli authorities, international organizations, and courts can examine the allegations independently. The case also touches on a central issue of the Gaza war: oversight of detention conditions in a conflict in which both sides allege serious violations of international humanitarian law.
