A6 near Fontainebleau remains closed for the time being after forest fires

Fontainebleau – 15 July 2026: The A6 motorway remains closed in both directions near Fontainebleau in Seine-et-Marne for the time being. Operator APRR stated that an immediate reopening after the severe forest fires is not possible. Experts must first inspect the affected section and ensure the safety of the infrastructure. The indicated detours remain in effect for travelers.

The fires in the Fontainebleau forest area broke out on Sunday, 12 July, near Noisy-sur-Ecole and spread rapidly. The incident command has since reported that the fire sites have been brought under control within their areas of spread. However, they have not yet been fully extinguished. Firefighters therefore remain in the area to locate smoldering remains and prevent new ignitions.

The closure affects an important transport link between the Paris region and Lyon. APRR had already closed the A6 on Sunday due to the fire’s proximity to the roadway and the considerable smoke development. For traffic heading toward Paris, the motorway operator refers to alternative routes via the A19, Sens and the A5. Detours have also been put in place toward Lyon.

For reopening, it is not sufficient that the flames are no longer advancing. According to the operator, road surfaces, protective equipment, signage and technical installations along the route must be inspected, among other things. Fire brigade operations near the motorway may also delay reopening. No exact time for the resumption of traffic has yet been given.

According to the authorities, the fires in the Fontainebleau massif affected more than 2,000 hectares. Hundreds of firefighters were deployed, supported by firefighting aircraft and helicopters. Residents in risk areas were brought to safety as a precaution. After the situation stabilized, the first evacuation measures could gradually be lifted.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot confirmed on 14 July that the A6 near Fontainebleau was still not passable. The closure serves to protect travelers, emergency services and staff investigating the damage. Motorists are advised to check the motorway operator’s current traffic information before departure and allow considerably more time for detour routes.

The investigation into the cause of the fires is ongoing. The Fontainebleau public prosecutor’s office is handling the case after a man was arrested in connection with one of the fires. Apart from the criminal investigation, securing the forest area and transport routes is currently a priority for the authorities. The A6 will only reopen when there is no longer any danger.
