The A6 motorway near Fontainebleau remains temporarily closed due to a forest fire.

Fontainebleau – July 15, 2026: The A6 motorway in the Fontainebleau section of Seine-et-Marne remains temporarily closed in both directions. Operator APRR stated that traffic cannot be restored immediately following the severe forest fire. Experts must first inspect the affected section and ensure that the infrastructure is safe. Travelers should continue to follow the signposted diversions.

The fire in the Fontainebleau forest area broke out on Sunday, July 12, near Noisy-sur-Ecole and spread rapidly. The incident command has now reported that the fire fronts have been contained within their respective perimeters, but have not yet been fully extinguished. Firefighters therefore remain on site to search for embers and prevent reignition.

The closure affects an important transport route between the Paris region and Lyon. Due to the proximity of the fire to the carriageway and heavy smoke, APRR closed the A6 motorway on Sunday. The motorway operator recommends that traffic heading toward Paris divert via the A19, Sens and the A5. A diversion route has also been set up for traffic heading toward Lyon.

The fact that the flames are no longer spreading alone is not sufficient to reopen the road. According to the operator, the carriageway, protective installations, signage and technical equipment along the route must also be inspected. In addition, firefighting operations around the motorway may delay reopening. No exact time for the restoration of traffic has yet been announced.

According to official information, the fire has affected more than 2,000 hectares of the Fontainebleau forest area. Hundreds of firefighters are involved in extinguishing the blaze, supported by firefighting aircraft and helicopters. Residents in danger zones were precautionarily moved to safe locations. As the situation stabilizes, the first evacuation measures are gradually being lifted.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot confirmed on July 14 that the A6 motorway near Fontainebleau remains impassable. The closure is intended to protect travelers, emergency personnel and staff responsible for assessing the damage. Motorists should check the latest traffic information issued by the motorway operator before setting off and allow significantly more time for diversion routes.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. A man was previously arrested in connection with one of the fires, and the Fontainebleau public prosecutor’s office is handling the case. In addition to the criminal investigation, the authorities’ current priority is ensuring the safety of the forest area and the main transport routes. The A6 motorway will only reopen once there is no longer any danger.
