Paris – 15 July 2026: The Renaissance party has announced legal action against the Rassemblement National (RN). The reason is Marine Le Pen’s new slogan for the 2027 presidential election: “For France, Renaissance.” The camp of Gabriel Attal considers the phrase a misappropriation of its political identity and accuses the RN of deliberately seeking to create confusion and benefit from the party’s notoriety.
Marine Le Pen publicly confirmed her candidacy on 7 July, while also presenting the first elements of her campaign. These include a website, an election manifesto and the new slogan. The term Renaissance is central to the political communication, although since 2022 it has also been the name of the party that emerged from the La République En Marche movement founded by Emmanuel Macron.
The announced lawsuit turns an initially symbolic dispute into a legal conflict. Renaissance’s ability to effectively limit the use of the phrase depends, among other things, on which naming and trademark rights are actually protected, how similar the respective political offerings appear and whether a significant risk of confusion can be demonstrated. So far, the party has mainly spoken of an abusive appropriation of its identity.
Politically, the episode can be exploited by both sides. Renaissance is defending a name that recalls Macron’s ambition to renew the political system. The RN, for its part, is seeking to frame Le Pen’s presidential campaign as a national project of renewal. The choice of words therefore targets an interpretive field that goes beyond questions of party law: who can credibly represent a new political beginning in France?
The timing is delicate for Renaissance. Gabriel Attal leads the party at a time when it must define its independent profile more clearly in relation to former president Emmanuel Macron and the other forces of the political centre. A legal dispute offers the opportunity to visibly defend its organisational brand. At the same time, there is a risk of giving the RN additional attention as it launches its election campaign.
For Marine Le Pen, too, the early presentation of a campaign identity is strategically important. Her candidacy is overshadowed by proceedings concerning the European parliamentary assistants of the former Front National. According to press reports, she has filed an appeal in cassation against the appeal ruling. Regardless of these proceedings, the launch of the campaign signals that the RN continues to plan for 2027 with Le Pen as its main candidate.
A court decision on the slogan would hardly determine the political impact of the campaign on its own. However, it could establish what limits apply in competition between parties in the use of established names and terms. Until then, the dispute remains an early sign that the campaign for the 2027 presidential election is already taking place, long before the official election period, around language, symbols and political affiliation.
