CROSS Med coordinates numerous rescue operations every day during the high season

La Garde – 15 July 2026: With the start of the summer season in the Mediterranean, the workload at the regional surveillance and rescue center CROSS Med increases noticeably. The control center in La Garde near Toulon receives emergency calls from commercial shipping, pleasure craft and water sports enthusiasts, and coordinates operations at sea. According to figures from a current report, up to around 50 rescue operations can take place in a single day during peak season.

CROSS Med operates continuously. Reports of missing persons, technical failures, fires, medical emergencies or boats that have lost maneuverability are received via the maritime emergency number 196, VHF radio on channel 16, emergency radio beacons and other communication channels. Rescuers must first determine as precisely as possible the location, number of people affected, weather conditions and immediate hazards.

The control center then coordinates available resources near the operation site. These include rescue boats operated by SNSM sea rescuers, helicopters, fire services, naval forces, the gendarmerie and other state or municipal services. CROSS Med does not necessarily carry out the rescue itself, but makes decisions on alerts, priorities and coordination of the forces involved. The time until help arrives remains crucial in cases of danger near rocks, fire or rough seas.

The center’s area of responsibility extends from the Spanish border to the Italian border and also includes Corsica. According to previously published figures from sea rescuers, several thousand rescue operations are coordinated there every year. The Mediterranean maritime prefect also reported that the number of operations managed by CROSS Med increased by six percent in 2025 compared with 2024. Around three quarters of all interventions took place between May and September.

The high number of operations is not only explained by the greater number of visitors on the coast. In summer, the number of trips to sea also increases on motorboats and sailboats, jet skis, paddleboards and with diving equipment. According to the responsible ministry, many incidents could be avoided through better preparation, appropriate safety equipment and a realistic assessment of weather, currents and personal experience.

Authorities recommend that people in distress at sea raise the alarm as early as possible and provide the most precise information possible. At sea, VHF radio channel 16 should be used, as this facilitates location determination; from land or via mobile phone, number 196 is available. Particularly important are the exact location, the nature of the problem, the number of people on board and the condition of the vessel.

CROSS Med was officially opened in May 2026 after its buildings were modernized. The investment was intended to ensure the continuous operation of the control center, whose staff work under considerable time pressure, especially during the summer months. A current look at everyday operations shows: behind every alarm signal is a rapid assessment of where and what help is needed most urgently.
