CROSS Med coordinates numerous rescue operations daily during the high season.

La Garde – 15/07/2026: With summer activity in the Mediterranean, the workload of the regional monitoring and rescue center CROSS Med increases sharply. The coordination center in La Garde, near Toulon, receives emergency calls from commercial shipping, recreational boaters and water sports participants, and directs operations at sea. According to information from a recent report, up to around 50 rescue operations may be necessary in a single day during peak season.

CROSS Med operates without interruption. Reports concerning missing persons, technical breakdowns, fires, medical emergencies or boats unable to maneuver arrive via the maritime emergency number 196, VHF radio on channel 16, distress beacons and other means of communication. Response teams must first establish as reliably as possible the location, number of people involved, weather conditions and immediate dangers.

The coordination center then mobilizes the resources available near the scene of the operation. These include SNSM rescue boats, helicopters, firefighters, the Navy, the gendarmerie and other state or local authority services. CROSS Med does not necessarily carry out the rescue itself, but decides on alerts, priorities and coordination of the forces deployed. The time needed before rescuers arrive remains crucial in cases of danger near rocks, fire or heavy seas.

The center’s area of responsibility extends from the Spanish border to the Italian border and also includes Corsica. According to previous information from sea rescuers, several thousand rescue operations are coordinated there each year. The Mediterranean maritime prefect also reported for 2025 a six percent increase in operations directed by CROSS Med compared with 2024. Around three quarters of operations took place between May and September.

The high number of operations is not explained solely by the increased number of visitors on the coast. In summer, outings on motorboats, sailboats, jet skis, paddleboards and with diving equipment also multiply. According to the responsible ministry, many incidents could be avoided through better preparation, appropriate safety equipment and a realistic assessment of weather, currents and one’s own experience.

For people in distress at sea, authorities recommend raising the alarm as early as possible and providing information as precise as possible. At sea, channel 16 should be used via VHF radio, as it facilitates locating; from land or by mobile phone, number 196 is available. Essential information includes the exact position, the nature of the problem, the number of people on board and the condition of the boat.

CROSS Med was officially inaugurated in May 2026 after the modernization of its buildings. This investment was intended to ensure the permanent operation of the coordination center, whose staff work under considerable time pressure, especially during the summer months. The current look at day-to-day operations shows this: behind every alert is a rapid assessment of the most urgent assistance and where it is needed.
