Renaissance takes legal action over Le Pen’s campaign slogan

Paris – 15 July 2026: The Renaissance party has announced legal action against the Rassemblement National (RN). The reason is Marine Le Pen’s new slogan for the 2027 presidential election: “For France, Renaissance.” The circle around Gabriel Attal considers the phrase an unlawful appropriation of its political identity and accuses the RN of deliberately seeking to cause confusion and benefit from the party’s notoriety.

Marine Le Pen publicly confirmed her candidacy on 7 July and at the same time presented the first elements of her campaign. These include a website, an election poster and the new slogan. The term Renaissance occupies a central place in political communication, although since 2022 it has also been the name of the party that emerged from Emmanuel Macron’s La Republique En Marche movement.

The announced lawsuit turns an initially symbolic dispute into a legal conflict. Whether Renaissance can effectively limit the use of the phrase will depend, among other things, on which rights to the name and trademark are actually protected, how similar the respective political offerings are, and whether a relevant risk of confusion can be demonstrated. For now, the party primarily speaks of an abusive appropriation of its identity.

Politically, the matter is useful to both sides. Renaissance is defending a name that refers to Macron’s claim to renew the political system. The RN, for its part, is seeking to present Le Pen’s presidential campaign as a national project of revitalization. Thus, the choice of words points to a field of interpretation that goes beyond issues of party law: who can credibly represent a new political beginning in France?

The timing is delicate for Renaissance. Gabriel Attal leads the party at a time when it must strengthen its own profile against former president Emmanuel Macron and other forces in the political centre. A legal dispute offers the opportunity to visibly defend the organisation’s brand. At the same time, there is a risk of giving the RN additional attention at the start of its election campaign.

For Marine Le Pen, the early presentation of a campaign identity is also strategically important. Her candidacy is marked by the proceedings concerning European parliamentary assistants of the former Front National. According to press reports, she has filed an appeal in cassation against the appeal judgment. Regardless of these proceedings, the start of the campaign indicates that the RN continues to count on Le Pen as its central candidate for 2027.

A court decision on the slogan is unlikely on its own to determine the political impact of the campaign. However, it could establish what limits apply in competition between parties when using established names and terms. Until then, the controversy remains an early sign that the campaign for the 2027 presidential election is already being fought, long before the official election period, over language, symbols and political affiliation.
