Early Heatwave in France: Health Risks and Impact on Events

France is in late May 2026 in the midst of an exceptionally early and intense heatwave. Temperatures of up to 36 °C were recorded in cities such as Bordeaux and Paris, which is clearly above the usual average values for this time of year.

These extreme temperatures have already led to health emergencies. During running events in Île-de-France last Sunday, several participants had to be medically treated due to the heat. Moreover, a fatality was recorded in Paris during another running event, with the exact cause not yet definitively established.

The current heatwave is the result of a so-called “Spanish Plume” phenomenon, where hot air masses flow from Spain to France. This meteorological occurrence causes a rapid and significant temperature increase, which is unusual for this period of the year.

In recent years, France has repeatedly suffered from the effects of heatwaves. In the summer of 2025, nearly 6,000 deaths were recorded that could be directly attributed to high temperatures. This number underscores the serious health risks associated with extreme heat conditions.

Given the current heatwave, Météo-France has issued a “Yellow Heatwave Alert” for 13 western departments, a measure that is unusual for the month of May. This warning level highlights the importance of special precautions, especially for vulnerable population groups.

The early and intense heatwave in France illustrates the increasing challenges in dealing with extreme weather conditions. It is expected that such phenomena will occur more frequently in the future, requiring increased attention and preparation at all levels.
