Early heatwave in France: health risks and impact on events

France is in the midst of an unusually early and intense heatwave at the end of May 2026. In cities such as Bordeaux and Paris, maximum temperatures have reached 36°C, far exceeding the usual averages for this time of year.

These extreme high temperatures have already caused a health emergency. At a running event held in the Île-de-France region last Sunday, multiple participants required emergency medical treatment due to heatstroke. Furthermore, another running event in Paris reported fatalities, although the exact causes of death have not yet been conclusively determined.

This heatwave is the result of the “Spanish Plume” phenomenon, where a mass of hot air from Spain flows into France. This weather phenomenon causes a rapid and significant rise in temperature that is unusual for this season.

France has been repeatedly affected by heatwaves over the past several years. In the summer of 2025, about 6,000 deaths were recorded directly attributed to high temperatures. This figure reflects the serious health risks associated with extreme heat conditions.

In response to the current heatwave, Météo-France has issued a “Yellow Heatwave Alert (Vigilance Jaune Canicule)” for 13 departments in the western part of the country, an unusual measure for May. This alert indicates special preventive measures are necessary especially for vulnerable individuals.

The early and intense heatwave in France highlights the increasing challenges in responding to extreme weather events. Such phenomena are expected to occur more frequently in the future, necessitating strengthened response and preparedness at all levels.
