Air Conditioning for a Limited Time: In Paris, Cooling Becomes a Rental Business

Paris – July 16, 2026: When heat builds up in homes, even an unobtrusive white appliance with an exhaust hose becomes a welcome visitor in summer. Companies renting out portable air conditioners are reporting unusually high demand in the Paris region. According to one provider, up to 500 units are currently delivered per day. Short-term rentals have become an alternative when searching sold-out DIY stores proves fruitless.

The model follows a distinctly modern logic. People who need cooling only for a few particularly hot days do not want to pay several hundred euros or keep a bulky appliance in storage for eleven months a year. Delivery, installation, and later collection turn rental air conditioners into a service for homes, offices, and small shops. Especially in densely built-up districts, they appear to be an improvised response to a summer that allows no patience.

But whether it is also a worthwhile option for users depends on more than the daily rate. Delivery costs, rental duration, and above all electricity consumption are added. France’s energy agency ADEME has been explicitly warning since late May against hastily adopting portable units. With appliances that have only one exhaust hose, a window must remain open, allowing warm outside air to flow back in. This reduces effectiveness and increases energy demand.

These portable monobloc air conditioners are also small paradoxes on wheels. They promise quick relief, yet under unfavorable conditions they operate while working against their own surroundings. ADEME estimates the annual electricity consumption of portable air conditioners at an average of around 710 kilowatt-hours. This figure represents typical annual use and does not necessarily indicate the cost of a one-week rental. Nevertheless, it explains why seemingly simple solutions should be chosen carefully.

For older people, those with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and families with infants, effective cooling can mean more than just comfort. In response to high temperatures, Santé publique France is calling for special care not to overlook people at particular risk or those living alone. In poorly insulated attic apartments or along noisy roads where nighttime ventilation is barely possible, a rental unit can provide temporary yet practical help.

However, the question of greater sustainability begins before the delivery vehicle arrives. External shutters, keeping windows closed during the hottest hours, nighttime ventilation, and shading can often noticeably lower indoor temperatures. If air conditioning is unavoidable, ADEME recommends setting the temperature to at least 26 degrees. Between the desire for immediate coolness and renovating homes to withstand heat lies the gap of an entire summer. And there is also an expanding market there.
