Paris – May 25, 2026: On Sunday night to Monday night, the western French cities of Lorient, Quimper, and Nantes recorded new high temperature records for May. These exceptional temperatures are part of a nationwide heatwave that also affected the west of France.
According to reports from the French Meteorological Service (Météo-France), Quimper recorded a temperature of 30.6°C, Lorient 30.4°C, and Nantes 30.2°C. These values significantly exceed the previous highest temperature records for May, representing unusual heat for the region.
The current heatwave is especially intense and early. Météo-France has issued a “Yellow Heat Alert” (Vigilance Jaune Canicule) for 13 western departments, covering Finistère, Morbihan, Ille-et-Vilaine, Mayenne, Sarthe, Loir-et-Cher, Indre-et-Loire, Maine-et-Loire, Loire-Atlantique, Vendée, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne, and Charente. This is the first time such alerts have been issued in May since the system was established in 2004.
The high temperatures have already affected many aspects of public life. For example, several sports events saw multiple people hospitalized due to heat-related issues. In Maisons-Alfort near Paris, 14 people were admitted to hospital after a game, including 10 emergency cases.
Experts attribute the current heatwave to a meteorological phenomenon called “Omega Block” (Ω-Blockade). This is a stable high-pressure area that traps warm air over large parts of the country, causing abnormal high temperatures.
Authorities advise the public, especially residents in the affected areas, to take preventive measures, including staying in the shade during the hottest periods, maintaining adequate hydration, and avoiding strenuous physical activity.
These exceptional high temperatures have also raised concerns about climate change. Climate researchers note that if global temperatures continue to rise, such heatwaves may become more frequent in the future.
The current weather conditions and related warnings will last until the end of this week, and the public is advised to closely follow local weather forecasts and official instructions.
