Threat Against Mayor of Ales: Envelope Containing Two 9mm Rounds Found

Ales – 17/07/2026: The mayor of Ales, Christophe Rivenq, has become the target of a police investigation following the discovery of a threatening letter at his private home. According to consistent reports, the envelope, discovered in the mailbox on the evening of July 16, contained two nine-millimeter rounds. The letter bore a signature in the name of the group DZ Mafia.

Rivenq said on Friday that he would not allow the intimidation to deter him from his duties as mayor. The incident targets an elected local official and is being treated as particularly serious by the relevant security authorities. No information about the perpetrators of the threat was initially made public.

Threatening graffiti had previously been discovered on the walls of the mayor’s home. According to media reports, these also referred to the DZ Mafia. However, it has not been established whether the authors of the messages actually belong to this criminal organization. The signature used is initially part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigators are examining the letter, the ammunition and the inscriptions for traces. The investigation concerns, in particular, suspected death threats and intimidation of an elected officeholder. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez assured Christophe Rivenq of the state’s support, according to local media. Several politicians and municipal representatives condemned the threats. The case once again draws attention to the protection of mayors and other elected representatives, who in France are repeatedly exposed to intimidation, property damage or threats of violence.

French investigative authorities consider the DZ Mafia to be a structured criminal group that has faced proceedings related to organized crime for years.
