More than 20,000 lightning strikes: 16 July was France’s stormiest day in 2026

Lyon – 17 July 2026: Thursday’s severe thunderstorms caused the most lightning-rich day of the year so far in France. According to Météo-France, more than 20,000 lightning strikes were recorded on 16 July. This made it the most thunderstorm-active day since the beginning of the year. The severe weather swept across large parts of the country and was locally accompanied by heavy rainfall, hail and powerful wind gusts.

The electrical activity hit the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region particularly hard. A large proportion of the lightning strikes were concentrated there. From the afternoon into the evening, some powerful thunderstorm cells developed in an area with very warm and unstable air masses. The situation affected, among others, the departments of Ain, Loire, Rhône, Isère, Ardèche and Drôme.

Météo-France had warned of intense thunderstorms on Thursday. The national weather service cited very heavy rainfall in a short period, large hailstones and storm-force wind gusts as possible impacts. According to initial assessments, local material damage occurred in several areas. As of Friday morning, there were no reports of serious personal injuries.

The assessment underscores this week’s exceptional weather situation. Since Wednesday, waves of thunderstorms have been moving across large parts of the country while the previously persistent extreme heat is subsiding. The contrast between hot, humid air near the ground and cooler air masses at higher altitudes promoted the rapid formation of particularly energetic thunderstorms.

The situation remains tense in parts of France on Friday, 17 July. According to Météo-France’s forecast, thunderstorms may form again in the afternoon, from Poitou via Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to the Paris Basin and Grand Est. Overall, they are expected to be less severe than the previous day, but may still cause heavy rainfall, hail and strong wind gusts locally.

For residents of affected areas, caution remains important. When thunderstorms approach, people should seek shelter in a sturdy building and keep away from isolated trees, water and metal installations. Motorists should not drive on flooded roads. Loose objects outdoors should be secured in time to limit damage from wind gusts.

Official weather warnings may change during the day because thunderstorms are spatially limited and can vary greatly at short notice. Authorities and the weather service therefore advise following the current situation in the relevant department. For the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, which was hardest hit on Thursday, the focus is now on assessing local damage after the severe weather.
