More than 20,000 lightning strikes: July 16 was the stormiest day in France in 2026

Lyon – 17 July 2026: Severe thunderstorms on Thursday produced the strongest lightning activity of the year so far in France. According to Météo-France data, more than 20,000 lightning strikes were recorded on 16 July. It was the most thunderstorm-active day since the start of the year. Extreme weather swept across many regions of the country, locally accompanied by heavy rain, hail and strong wind gusts.

Atmospheric electrical activity particularly affected the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. A large proportion of the lightning strikes were concentrated there. From the afternoon into the evening, strong thunderstorm cells formed in a very hot and unstable air mass. The situation affected, among other places, the departments of Ain, Loire, Rhône, Isère, Ardèche and Drôme.

Météo-France had warned of severe thunderstorms on Thursday. The national weather agency cited possible consequences including very heavy rain in a short period, large hail and storm-force wind gusts. According to initial assessments, localized property damage occurred in several areas. As of Friday morning, there were no reports of serious injuries to people.

This assessment reflects the unusual weather situation this week. Since Wednesday, thunderstorms have affected large parts of the country, while the preceding prolonged heatwave has been weakening. The contrast between hot, humid air near the ground and cooler air masses aloft promoted the rapid formation of particularly energetic thunderstorms.

The situation in some parts of France remained tense on Friday, 17 July. According to Météo-France forecasts, thunderstorms may continue to form in the afternoon, from Poitou through Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to the Paris Basin and Grand Est. Overall, they are likely to be less intense than the previous day, but may still locally bring heavy rain, hail and strong wind gusts.

Residents in affected areas should continue to exercise caution. When thunderstorms approach, people should seek shelter in a solid building and keep their distance from isolated trees, bodies of water and metal structures. Drivers should not enter flooded roads. Unsecured outdoor objects should be secured in time to limit damage caused by wind gusts.

Official weather warnings may change during the day, as thunderstorms are often limited in area and can develop very differently over short periods. Authorities and weather agencies therefore recommend monitoring the current situation in each department. After the extreme weather, documenting local damage is now the focus in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, which was most severely affected on Thursday.
