Fuel assistance for commuters: Demand remains subdued just days before deadline

Paris – 19/07/2026: Just over 11 days before the application deadline expires, the French government is once again promoting its fuel assistance for workers with long travel distances. The one-off payment of 100 euros can still be requested via the tax administration portal until 30/07/2026. It is not aimed at all motorists, but at low-income workers who make intensive professional use of their private vehicle.

According to Franceinfo, only around 40 percent of those eligible have submitted an application so far. The government did not publish a current official total on Sunday. The initially high number of applications after the online procedure opened on 27/05/2026 therefore appears not to have translated into comprehensive uptake of the program. This is politically relevant for the state because the assistance was designed as a targeted response to rising fuel prices.

Eligible applicants are people with tax residence in France who were at least 16 years old in 2024 and earned employment income in 2024. Their reference tax income must not exceed 16,880 euros per tax unit; they must also not have been subject to the real estate wealth tax. The scheme therefore covers the bottom five income deciles and generally excludes households with higher incomes.

There is also a professional mobility criterion. Support is available to those who travel at least 15 kilometers each way daily between home and workplace, or drive at least 8,000 kilometers for professional reasons over the course of a year. The vehicle must have an internal combustion engine or be a hybrid that cannot be externally charged, must be insured, and may not be a company car, agricultural vehicle or heavy commercial vehicle.

The Finance Ministry puts the flat-rate payment at the equivalent of compensation of 20 cents per liter, based on average consumption of 500 liters over six months. The assistance is granted only once per vehicle. Applications are made in two stages: first, a simulator checks the requirements; if the result is positive, access to the actual form is unlocked.

The measure was introduced in connection with the effects of the conflict in the Middle East on energy prices. Originally set at 50 euros, the government doubled the flat-rate payment to 100 euros in May and extended the calculation period to six months. The Senate estimated the total cost at around 320 million euros. Unlike a general reduction in fuel taxes, the measure focuses relief on employees and self-employed people with demonstrably high dependence on private cars.

Low participation may have several causes: strict income and vehicle requirements, the link to 2024 tax and employment data, and a digital procedure that first requires a preliminary check. At the same time, the design deliberately limits fiscal costs. The government has not yet announced whether it will extend the deadline beyond 30/07/2026.
