Controversy Surrounding the Cancelled Queen Tribute Concert in Orange

Orange – July 19, 2026: In the vast semicircular seating area of Orange’s ancient theater, the music of Queen was set to ring out on September 4. However, the concert “Queen Forever” has been cancelled. The city authorities’ decision has sparked a debate over cultural policy in this municipality in southern France and is now also being addressed in court.

Mayor Jean-Dominique Artaud confirmed the cancellation of the event together with the city authorities. Artaud was elected mayor in March 2026 on a candidate list of the National Rally (Rassemblement National). According to the producer, the municipality cited financial considerations as the reason for the cancellation. A detailed public breakdown of the costs associated with the cancellation was not initially announced.

What had been planned was not a performance by the British band itself, but a large-scale tribute to its repertoire. According to producer David Hardy, around 600 volunteer singers were due to take part that evening. For many of them, it would have meant performing on the historic stage of the Roman theater, considered one of the city’s leading cultural venues.

Hardy rejected the financial reasons and, according to his own account, took legal action against the decision. He intends to have the administrative court review the validity of the cancellation. As of Sunday, it was unclear whether the court would intervene quickly or uphold the city’s decision. No date for an initial ruling has yet been announced.

The issue therefore extends beyond a one-night concert. Organizers, volunteer participants, and prospective attendees face uncertainty over whether the project can still take place. For the logistics, rehearsals, and technical preparations already planned, the cancellation represents a major setback. Information on possible compensation or refunds was also not initially made public.

Because cultural programming at this historic theater attracts attention far beyond the municipality, Orange’s decision is receiving particularly close scrutiny. The dispute links questions concerning municipal finances with the fundamental issue of how far a newly elected city administration may intervene in cultural events that had already been prepared.

Legally, only one thing is certain until a court ruling is issued: the concert scheduled for Friday, September 4, 2026, has been cancelled. The producer’s claims and the city’s explanation coexist. Whether the cancellation was lawful and whether “Queen Forever” can return in another form will depend on future statements by the parties involved and proceedings before the administrative court.
