Wildfire in the Var threatens Taradeau and Les Arcs

Taradeau – 19 July 2026: Several vegetation fires threatened the municipalities of Taradeau and Les Arcs-sur-Argens in the Var department on Sunday. According to information from Franceinfo, the flames spread exceptionally quickly under the influence of strong winds. Several homes were affected by the fires in the impacted areas. The situation remained tense in the evening as emergency services worked to contain the spread.

The affected locations are in central Var, an area with dry vegetation and numerous wooded areas. For residents, protecting residential neighborhoods was the main priority. One resident told Franceinfo of concerns that their home could become uninhabitable that very evening. No reliable assessment of damage to buildings was initially available.

In addition to the impact on the population, there were significant transport disruptions. Train services on the route between Toulon and Nice were suspended because of the fires. The line passes through several areas of the Cote d’Azur and Var that are particularly vulnerable to wildfires. Travelers had to expect cancellations, delays or last-minute changes to their journeys.

The Var prefecture had ordered extensive precautionary measures for Sunday because of the exceptionally high wildfire risk. According to a current statement by the authorities, all forest areas in the department were closed to visitors. The risk level was classified as particularly severe in several areas, including Haut-Var, Monts Toulonnais, Sainte-Baume and the Corniche des Maures.

Authorities urged people to avoid any possible source of ignition outdoors. Open fires, barbecues near forests, discarded cigarettes and work on dry vegetation can quickly lead to a major fire under such conditions. If a fire starts, witnesses should immediately alert the fire service on 18 or the Europe-wide emergency number 112 and provide the exact location.

As of Sunday evening, no confirmed information was available on the cause of the individual fire outbreaks in the Taradeau and Les Arcs-sur-Argens areas. Nor had any confirmed information been published about injuries, the size of the burned area or possible evacuations. The incident highlights the heavy strain on emergency services and infrastructure in southern France during dry and windy summer conditions. Rail traffic between Toulon and Nice can resume normally only once the route and its facilities are deemed safe after the operation.
