Wildfire in Var: Returnees in Taradeau Remain Concerned About Smoldering Hotspots

Taradeau – 20 July 2026: Following the major wildfire in central Var, numerous residents who had previously been evacuated are returning to their homes in Taradeau and several neighborhoods of Les Arcs-sur-Argens. According to Franceinfo, the fire’s immediate spread has been stopped. For those affected, however, the danger is not over: firefighters are still searching for smoldering hotspots in the burned areas and securing the perimeter zones.

The fire broke out on the afternoon of Sunday, 19 July, near Taradeau. Wind and very dry vegetation accelerated its spread toward Les Arcs-sur-Argens. According to information based on reports from the Var prefecture, the fire affected around 200 hectares. Other situation reports cite approximately 180 hectares. The differing area estimates show that the final assessment has not yet been established.

Around 150 people had to leave their homes as a precaution. Residents of Taradeau were able to return on Sunday evening at around 10 p.m.; the evacuation was also lifted for parts of Les Arcs-sur-Argens. Four houses and 15 vehicles were damaged or destroyed, according to authorities. The return was authorized even though incident command continues to classify the fire area as labor-intensive.

According to Prefect Simon Babre, around 615 firefighters from Var and four neighboring districts were deployed. Ground crews were supported by five Canadair firefighting aircraft, four firefighting helicopters and two civil protection Dash aircraft. The air support helped contain the rapid spread. For the subsequent securing operation, however, ground crews are especially crucial, as individual fire sites can flare up again.

Firefighters are focusing in particular on hard-to-reach areas near the vegetation that has already burned. There, heat in the ground, hidden embers and changing wind conditions can prolong firefighting operations. Residents are therefore continuing to monitor the response closely. Returning to residential areas does not mean the all-clear as long as the fire zone has not been completely extinguished and inspected.

During the operation, access routes to Les Arcs-sur-Argens were closed. Rail services between Toulon and Les Arcs were also temporarily suspended. The fire occurred during a period of very high temperatures in southeastern France. The dry vegetation and wind had significantly worsened conditions for the fire to spread rapidly.

Authorities have not yet released any confirmed information on the cause of the fire. For the affected municipalities, the focus is now not only on continued fire watch but also on assessing the damage. It remains essential that emergency crews retain sufficient resources on site even after the fire front has been halted: only the elimination of all smoldering hotspots can reliably reduce the risk of renewed spread.
