Four Arrests After Fleeing and Helicopter Operation on the A43 in Isere

Nivolas-Vermelle – 20 July 2026: An overturned car on the motorway, four people fleeing on foot through surrounding areas, and a gendarmerie helicopter above them: an accident on the A43 in Isere on Monday morning triggered a major operation involving police, gendarmerie officers and emergency services. By the afternoon, all four occupants had reportedly been arrested.

The accident occurred at around 7:40 a.m. on the carriageway towards Lyon, between Nivolas-Vermelle and Ruy-Montceau. A Renault Kadjar and at least one lorry were involved. The car is said to have come to rest on its roof. Before emergency services arrived, the vehicle’s four occupants left the car and fled over the motorway boundary fences into nearby areas.

The search was quickly expanded. Police officers and gendarmes searched the area, supported by a helicopter from the gendarmerie’s aviation unit based in Bron. According to local media reports, warning shots were fired during the operation. The circumstances of this incident and the exact sequence of events are among the issues that the investigation must further clarify.

Three people were initially apprehended, while the fourth man was found and arrested late in the morning in a wooded area by gendarmes from the PSIG Villefontaine intervention unit. Several of those involved received medical treatment. According to local media, at least one person was more seriously injured and was treated by firefighters and the emergency medical team from Bourgoin-Jallieu. Authorities initially did not disclose any information about identities or possible allegations.

According to the information known so far, officers found numerous mobile phones and accessories in the crashed Renault Kadjar. The vehicle was also reportedly declared stolen over the weekend. Whether the items came from a burglary and what role each of those arrested is alleged to have played are the subject of the ongoing investigation. Until a judicial assessment is made, all those involved are presumed innocent.

The A43 remained closed in the direction of Lyon during rescue operations, evidence collection and the manhunt. Traffic was diverted off the motorway at La Tour-du-Pin, causing major disruption. The road was reopened shortly after 12:15 p.m. The case shows how a traffic accident can turn into a complex operation within minutes, requiring accident assistance, a manhunt and forensic work to be organised simultaneously.
