Helmet sensors in the Tour peloton: Uno-X and NSN test a new tool against concussions

France – 21.07.2026: Amid the dense noise of the Tour de France peloton, a crash can be over in a few seconds, but its consequences often remain invisible. Uno-X Mobility and NSN Cycling Team are therefore testing sensors integrated into helmets during the 113th Grande Boucle. These small devices are intended to record severe forces on the head and provide additional data to medical staff after an accident.

The sensor does not make a diagnosis and does not replace either the race doctor or examinations on the team bus. Its usefulness lies at another moment: after an impact, it can trigger an alert and record data on the intensity of the blow. Doctors and team managers thus have an additional element when the decision must be made quickly whether to continue racing, place the rider under observation, or withdraw them.

The importance of this additional information became apparent in the case of Torstein Traeen. The Norwegian rider from Uno-X Mobility crashed on 09.07.2026 during the sixth stage, on the descent of the Col du Tourmalet. He did reach the finish, but did not start the following day. After additional examinations, analysis of the sensor data, and X-rays, a concussion as well as several rib fractures were diagnosed.

This case highlighted the particular difficulty of cycling. Unlike indoor sports, there is no timeout allowing a player to be fully examined. After a crash, medical assessment must work under race conditions: by the roadside, under time pressure, and often with a rider whose adrenaline initially masks an injury.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has introduced a gradual protocol for the detection and treatment of concussions in international races. It includes checking symptoms, orientation, memory, balance, and mobility. If warning signs are present, a rider cannot continue. Helmet data cannot replace this examination, but it can help ensure that a critical impact is not missed.

For Uno-X, this test has therefore already taken on a concrete dimension in sports medicine. Traeen had worn the yellow jersey for two days earlier in this Tour; his withdrawal underscored that standings and race pace must come after rider protection. Sensor technology is not an automatic green light, but an additional warning signal in cycling’s most eventful race.

For NSN Cycling Team as well, the trial represents more than just a technical detail on the helmet. If the measurements are systematically compared with medical findings, the method could make monitoring after crashes more precise in the future. In the best case, an unnoticed blow to the head becomes a clear reason to carry out a second, more thorough examination before a rider returns to the slipstream of the peloton.
