Tour de France: Evenepoel seeks seconds on Pogacar in the Evian time trial

Thonon-les-Bains – 21 July 2026: The lake lies calm beneath the slopes of the Chablais, but on the roads between Evian-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains, every pedal stroke counts on Tuesday afternoon. Stage 16 of the Tour de France is the only individual time trial of this edition: 26.1 kilometres in which Remco Evenepoel hopes to use his great specialist discipline to reduce the gap to Tadej Pogacar in the battle for the overall classification.

The Belgian rider from Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe faces a profile that demands more than pure top speed. Immediately after the start, the route climbs from Evian-les-Bains towards the Cote de Larringes. The Category 2 ascent forces riders to carefully manage their equipment and energy: a time trial bike that is too heavy costs time on the climb, while one that is too light can prove a disadvantage on the flat, fast final section towards Thonon-les-Bains.

The stage then drops into a technical descent. Corners, changes of rhythm and positioning on the bike are as decisive there as power output. Only in the final third does the road open up again for the specialists. The approach to Thonon-les-Bains nevertheless demands precision, as several changes of direction prevent the finale from becoming a mere test of strength on a straight road.

For Evenepoel, this day is a strategic window. Pogacar has repeatedly demonstrated his strength in the high-mountain stages; the time trial offers the Olympic champion the chance to strike back with aerodynamics, cadence and clean line choice. The direct comparison with the Slovenian will be a measure of how open the third week of the Tour still is. A stage result or time gaps had not been confirmed as final at the time this article was prepared.

Paul Seixas is also in the spotlight. The French Decathlon CMA CGM rider enters a phase of the race in which young classification contenders are tested not only on their willingness to attack, but also on their ability to manage their effort. His main objective is a controlled performance: not to overextend on the climb, take no unnecessary risks on the descent, and preserve enough reserves on the flat section for a steady finish.

The individual time trial follows the team time trial opening stage in Barcelona and occupies a special role in the 2026 Tour programme. After Thonon-les-Bains, the route goes from Chambery to Voiron on 22 July 2026, before the decisive mountain stages follow. For Evenepoel, Pogacar and Seixas, Tuesday is therefore not an interlude but a quiet test: the clock will provide answers long before the Alps deliver their final verdicts.
