Twenty-one participants started, and seventeen reached Rouen. Steam, gasoline, and all kinds of technical peculiarities competed against one another. Jules-Albert de Dion was the first to cross the finish line with his steam vehicle, but his car required a driver and therefore did not fit the ideal of an easy-to-use family vehicle. The distinction consequently went to the gasoline cars of Peugeot and Panhard & Levassor. The winner’s trophy did not reward the greatest spectacle, but the most practical idea. An autopilot and a gyroscopic compass assisted him; this is precisely why his journey also symbolizes a change in the relationship between humans and machines. The pilot remained the one making decisions, but the instruments helped him maintain his orientation and endurance.
This is where Paris-Rouen and Post’s round-the-world flight come together. Both events were demonstrations of performance, but not merely record chases. They tested whether new machines were reliable enough for everyday life, commerce, and long distances. The participants on the country road in 1894 and the pilot above the seas in 1933 helped prepare a world in which distances seemed manageable. Travel did not lose its risks, but it lost part of its frightening dimension.
What does this mean for us, who curse traffic jams, compare flights, and let navigation systems guide us? July 22 reminds us that technical comfort is always linked to choices. The automobile brought freedom, industry, and mobility, but also energy dependence, accidents, land development, and cities under pressure. The airplane connected continents, promoted trade, family visits, and cultural exchange, while its ecological cost also increased. Progress rarely resembles a straight highway; it is more like a winding country road, with unexpected potholes.
France knows this tension particularly well. The country of early automotive pioneers now embodies high-speed trains, dense cities, cycling policies, and the search for clean mobility. The question is no longer simply: how can we get to Rouen faster or travel around the world? Rather, it is: what kind of transportation suits a world with limited resources and people who, when traveling, do not merely want to save time but also want to live well?
July 22, 1894, and July 22, 1933, do not provide a ready-made answer. However, they show that every major transportation revolution begins with an attempt: a few machines on the outskirts of Paris, a lone pilot at an airfield, plenty of skepticism, and even more curiosity. From this mixture emerged our mobile present, fascinating, contradictory, and sometimes as temperamental as an engine in the rain.
