The Parisian newspaper Le Petit Journal announced a competition for “Voitures sans chevaux,” meaning carriages without horses. The route covered around 126 kilometres to Rouen. Speed was not the only factor. The jury also assessed safety, ease of operation and economy. It sounds remarkably modern: even then, the question was not only whether a vehicle was fast, but whether people were ready to entrust it with their everyday lives.
Twenty-one participants started, and seventeen reached Rouen. Steam, petrol and all kinds of technical curiosities competed with one another. Jules-Albert de Dion crossed the finish line first in his steam car, but his machine required a stoker and therefore did not meet the ideal of a simple family vehicle. The prize therefore went to petrol cars made by Peugeot and Panhard & Levassor. The winner’s cup went not to the most spectacular solution, but to the more practical idea. A subtle touch of history: the future did not necessarily cross the finish line first.
Paris-Rouen was not a race in the modern sense, despite the dusty road, ambition and curious crowds along the route. It was a public endurance test for a new technology. Horses were frightened by the machines, mechanics repaired them along the way, and spectators marvelled at the sounds. The automobile had to prove that it was more than a toy for inventors and wealthy people. It passed this test. Not perfectly, not quietly, not elegantly at every moment—but convincingly enough.
Thus began a French story that extended far beyond Normandy. Around 1900, France was among the important laboratories of automobilism. Wiley Post landed at Floyd Bennett Field in his Lockheed Vega “Winnie Mae” and became the first person to fly around the world alone. He completed the journey in seven days, eighteen hours and forty-nine minutes. More than 50,000 people awaited him at the airfield. The news spread around the globe—faster than the person who created it.
Post flew alone, with only one functioning eye, and under conditions that today seem almost unreal. His route crossed several continents, through bad weather, technical uncertainty and the constant danger of navigating without modern satellite systems. An autopilot and gyroscopic compass made his work easier; this is why the journey also embodies a change in the relationship between humans and machines. The pilot remained the decision-maker, but the instruments helped him maintain orientation and endurance.
This is precisely where Paris-Rouen and Post’s around-the-world flight intersect. Both events were demonstrations of possibility, but not merely a chase for records. They tested whether new machines were reliable enough for everyday life, commerce and great distances. The participants on the highway in 1894 and the pilot above the seas in 1933 helped prepare a world in which distances began to seem predictable. Travel did not lose its risk, but it lost some of its fear.
What does this mean for us, who curse traffic jams, compare flights and let navigation systems tell us where to go? July 22 reminds us that technical convenience is always tied to decisions. The automobile brought freedom, industry and mobility, but also dependence on energy, accidents, paved-over spaces and congested cities. The aircraft connected continents, supported trade, visits to relatives and cultural exchange, while its environmental burden grew. Progress rarely resembles a straight motorway; it is more like a winding country road with unexpected potholes.
France knows this tension particularly well. The country of early automotive pioneers is now associated with high-speed trains, dense cities, cycling policy and the search for clean mobility. The question is no longer only: how can we get to Rouen faster or fly around the world? It is: what mode of transport suits a world with limited resources and people who, while travelling, want not only to save time but also to live well?
July 22, 1894 and July 22, 1933 do not provide a ready-made answer. But they show that every great transport revolution begins with an attempt: a few machines on the outskirts of Paris, one pilot at an airfield, a great deal of scepticism and even more curiosity. From this mixture emerged our mobile modernity—fascinating, contradictory and sometimes as temperamental as an engine in the rain.
