Two firefighters die in blaze near Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport

Mérignac – July 22, 2026: Following the deaths of two firefighters in a blaze near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport, the Gironde department is reeling from the shock of an extremely serious accident during firefighting operations. The two full-time firefighters, assigned to the Saint-Médard-en-Jalles fire station, died on Tuesday, July 21, while responding to a rapidly spreading fire.

The fire broke out early in the afternoon in a densely wooded area along Avenue Roland Garros in Mérignac. According to the command center of the Gironde Fire and Rescue Service, the first units arrived at the scene at 2:21 p.m. The fire spread into the tree canopy, and shifting winds and numerous embers made firefighting efforts considerably more difficult.

A water tanker fire engine from a forest fire response unit dispatched from Saint-Médard-en-Jalles was engulfed by flames during the initial firefighting phase. The two firefighters in the vehicle died. The exact reason why they became trapped remains unclear. A forthcoming investigation is expected to reconstruct the sequence of events. Any statements at this stage about possible technical or tactical shortcomings would be speculative.

The on-scene command initially assessed the situation as particularly critical because industrial facilities, residential areas, and Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport are adjacent to the forested area. According to reports, around 120 personnel, approximately 60 vehicles, and aerial support were deployed. On the evening of July 21, fire authorities announced that the blaze had been contained. This eliminated the immediate danger to airport facilities.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced the fatalities on Tuesday during government questions in the National Assembly. He explained that he had been informed by the prefect of Gironde of the deaths of the two personnel. A visit by the minister to Mérignac was planned for July 22. Support for the bereaved families and the entire fire service, as well as coordination with local authorities, will be central issues.

In Saint-Médard-en-Jalles and Mérignac, deep mourning and sympathy have spread following the deaths of the two men. Public tributes are directed not only at the victims but also at the personnel who continued firefighting operations after the incident. The case highlights the dangers of vegetation and forest fires in the dry pine forest region around Bordeaux, where changing wind directions can alter the intensity of a fire within minutes.

The investigation will focus on two points: the cause of the fire and the specific progression of the blaze that led to the fire engine becoming trapped. Prosecutors and police are expected to analyze testimony, operational data, and possible video recordings.
