Two firefighters die in a blaze near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport

Mérignac – 22 July 2026: Following the deaths of two firefighters in a blaze near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport, Gironde is shaken by an operational accident of exceptional severity. The two professionals from the Saint-Médard-en-Jalles fire station died on Tuesday, 21 July, while responding to a rapidly spreading fire.

The fire broke out in the early afternoon in an area of dense vegetation on Avenue Roland-Garros in Mérignac. According to the management of the Gironde fire and rescue service, the first units arrived at the scene at 2:21 p.m. The fire spread through the treetops; shifting winds and numerous glowing hotspots made the operation considerably more difficult.

A water tanker from a forest fire unit deployed from Saint-Médard-en-Jalles was trapped by the flames during the initial attack phase. Two firefighters occupying the vehicle died. The exact reason they became surrounded is not yet known. It must now be reconstructed as part of an investigation. Any statement regarding a possible technical or tactical failure would be speculative at this time.

Incident command initially assessed the situation as particularly critical, as industrial facilities, residential areas and Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport were located next to the forest area. According to media reports, around 120 personnel, some 60 vehicles and air support were mobilized. On the night of 21 July, the fire service reported that the blaze had been contained. This meant there was no longer any immediate danger to airport facilities.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced the deaths on Tuesday during the government question session in the National Assembly. He explained that the prefect of Gironde had informed him of the deaths of the two personnel. A visit by the minister to Mérignac had been announced for 22 July. The focus is on supporting the relatives and the entire fire service, as well as on coordination with local authorities.

In Saint-Médard-en-Jalles and Mérignac, the deaths of the two men prompted a great outpouring of solidarity. The public tribute is directed not only at the victims, but also at the personnel who continued firefighting efforts after the tragedy. The case highlights the risks of vegetation and forest fires in the dry pine areas around Bordeaux, where changes in wind can alter the spread within minutes.

For the investigation, two questions are fundamental: the origin of the fire and the specific circumstances in which the emergency vehicle became surrounded. Prosecutors and police will have to analyze witness statements, operational data and possible image recordings. Until conclusive results are available, both the cause of the fire and the precise course of the fatal operation remain unclear.
