Two firefighters killed in blaze near Bordeaux-Mérignac airport

Mérignac – 22 July 2026: Following the deaths of two firefighters in a blaze near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport, Gironde is reeling from the shock of a particularly serious accident while on duty. Two professional firefighters from the Saint-Médard-en-Jalles fire station died on Tuesday, 21 July, while responding to a rapidly spreading fire.

The fire broke out in the early afternoon in a densely wooded area on Avenue Roland-Garros in Mérignac. According to the leadership of the Gironde fire and rescue service, the first units arrived at the scene at 2:21 p.m. The flames spread through the tree canopies; constantly shifting winds and numerous embers significantly hampered containment efforts.

A water tanker from the forest firefighting unit dispatched from Saint-Médard-en-Jalles was surrounded by flames during the initial attack phase. The two firefighters aboard were killed. The exact circumstances that led to them becoming trapped remain unclear. This will now be reconstructed as part of the investigation. At present, any assessment of possible technical or tactical errors is purely speculative.

Incident command initially assessed the situation as particularly serious because industrial facilities, residential areas, and Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport are located near the forested area. According to media reports, around 120 emergency personnel, some 60 vehicles, and aerial support were deployed. On the evening of 21 July, the fire service announced that the blaze had been contained. The airport therefore no longer faced a direct threat.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced the deaths on Tuesday during government questions in the National Assembly. He said that the prefect of Gironde had informed him of the deaths of the two firefighters. The minister’s visit to Mérignac was announced for 22 July. The focus is on supporting the relatives, the entire fire service, and coordination with local authorities.

In Saint-Médard-en-Jalles and Mérignac, the deaths of the two men caused deep emotion. Public tributes are directed not only at the victims, but also at the teams that continued firefighting operations after the accident. The incident highlights the risks of vegetation and forest fires in the dry forest regions around Bordeaux, where changes in wind direction can alter the rate of spread within minutes.

Two questions are central to the investigation: the source of the fire and the specific sequence of events that led to the fire engine being surrounded. Prosecutors and police will assess witness statements, operational data, and any available video recordings. Until reliable findings are available, neither the cause of the fire nor the precise course of the operation that led to the deaths has been clarified.
