Bordeaux – 22 July 2026: A smouldering cigarette butt thrown from a moving car can these days be far more than a thoughtless gesture. Given the extremely high risk of forest fires in the Gironde department, the Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office has announced tougher action. The vehicles of people who throw cigarette butts from the window in natural areas may be sealed.
Public prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul announced this exceptional measure on Wednesday. It is aimed at potential causes of fires that are human-made and avoidable. According to the prosecutor, the vehicle is to be seized as evidence. The judicial authorities will decide on any possible criminal-law assessment in each case on the basis of the specific circumstances and the results of the investigation.
The announcement came in a particularly tense situation. Since Tuesday, 21 July, the Gironde authorities have raised the forest fire warning level to the highest level. Dry vegetation and high temperatures increase the risk that a small spark will cause a fire in open countryside or forest within a short time. For firefighters, municipalities and residents, this means a period of heightened vigilance.
The focus is on a familiar scene along roadsides, rural routes and wooded areas: a car drives on while a lit cigarette falls into dry grass. It is precisely in such locations that emergency services are often only able to reconstruct the source of a fire with great difficulty. Seizing the vehicle may help investigators preserve traces and examine the course of a possible offence.
The measure is not a conviction of individual drivers. It is primarily aimed at securing evidence and applies only in cases where there is corresponding suspicion. Whether charges will be brought, which offences may apply in a specific case and whether a fire was actually caused remain the subject of the investigation and, if necessary, court proceedings.
Renaud Gaudeul has worked as a public prosecutor in Bordeaux for many years. In the current dangerous situation, his office is working with the police and other security agencies. The tougher approach combines two aspects: protecting people, homes and natural areas on the one hand, and criminal investigations into possible perpetrators on the other.
For drivers, the message is clear: cigarette remains should not be thrown out of the window, especially not in areas with dried-out vegetation. In a situation where the highest forest fire warning level is in force in Gironde, a carelessly discarded cigarette butt can become a matter for firefighters, police and the public prosecutor’s office.
