Bordeaux tackles cigarette littering by impounding vehicles

Bordeaux – 22 July 2026: A still-smouldering cigarette butt thrown from a moving car can have far more serious consequences these days than a thoughtless act. Due to the extremely high risk of forest fires in Gironde, the Bordeaux Public Prosecutor’s Office has announced tougher measures. The vehicles of people who throw cigarette butts out of windows in natural areas may be impounded.

Public prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul announced this special measure on Wednesday. It targets potential human-caused and preventable sources of fire. According to the prosecutor, the vehicle will be preserved as evidence. Whether criminal liability will be assessed will be decided by the judiciary on a case-by-case basis, depending on the circumstances and the results of the investigation.

The announcement comes amid a particularly tense situation. Since Tuesday, 21 July, authorities in Gironde have raised the forest fire alert to its highest level. Dry vegetation and high temperatures increase the risk that a small spark could cause a grass or forest fire within a short time. For firefighters, municipalities and residents, this is a period requiring the utmost vigilance.

The focus is on a common scene along roadsides, on rural roads and in wooded areas: A car continues driving while a lit cigarette falls into dry grass. Particularly in such places, emergency services can often reconstruct the origin of a fire only with considerable effort. Seizing the vehicle may help investigators preserve evidence and examine the course of a possible offence.

This measure is not a judgment against every driver. First and foremost, it focuses on preserving evidence and applies only in cases where there is corresponding suspicion. Whether prosecution takes place, which criminal provisions apply in each case and whether a fire was actually caused remain subject to the investigation and, if necessary, court proceedings.

Renaud Gaudeul has been a public prosecutor in Bordeaux for many years. In the current dangerous situation, his office is coordinating with the police and other security forces. This tougher approach combines two objectives: protecting people, homes and natural areas on the one hand, and clarifying the criminal responsibility of individuals who may have caused the incident on the other.

The message to drivers is clear: Cigarette butts do not belong outside a car window, especially not in landscapes with dry vegetation. With Gironde at the highest forest fire alert level, a carelessly discarded cigarette butt can become a matter for firefighters, the police and the public prosecutor’s office.
