Bordeaux – July 22, 2026: A smouldering cigarette butt thrown from a moving vehicle can mean more than just carelessness at this time of year. In view of the extremely high risk of forest fires in the Gironde department, the Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office has announced a tougher response. The vehicle of anyone who throws a cigarette butt from a car window in a natural area may be impounded.
Public prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul announced the unusual measure on Wednesday. It targets causes of fires that are human-caused and potentially preventable. According to the prosecutor, vehicles will be secured as evidence. The criminal assessment will be determined by the judicial authorities on a case-by-case basis, depending on the specific circumstances and the findings of the investigation.
The announcement came amid a particularly tense situation. Since Tuesday, July 21, authorities in Gironde had raised the forest fire alert level to its highest stage. Dry vegetation and high temperatures increase the risk that a small spark could cause a brush or forest fire within a short time. For firefighters, municipalities and residents, this is a period requiring increased vigilance.
The focus is on everyday scenes along roadsides, country roads and forest areas. A vehicle drives away while a lit cigarette falls into dry grass. In such places, fire crews often need considerable effort to identify the origin of a fire. Seizing the vehicle may help investigators preserve traces and examine the circumstances of potentially criminal conduct.
The measure does not constitute a finding of guilt against a particular driver. Its initial purpose is to preserve evidence, and it applies only to cases involving relevant suspicion. Whether charges will be brought, which criminal offence may apply in an individual case, and whether a fire was actually caused are matters for investigation and, where necessary, court proceedings.
Renaud Gaudeul has served as a public prosecutor in Bordeaux for many years. His office is coordinating with the police and other security agencies under the current hazardous conditions. This stricter approach combines two aspects: protecting people, homes and natural areas on the one hand, and pursuing criminal clarification regarding those who may have caused the incident on the other.
The message to drivers is clear: do not throw cigarette butts out of the window, especially in areas where vegetation has dried out. With Gironde under the highest forest fire alert level, a carelessly discarded cigarette butt can become a matter for firefighters, police and prosecutors.
