Two firefighters die in wildfire near Bordeaux - fire engine protection system under investigation

Mérignac - 22 July 2026: Two professional firefighters from the Saint-Médard-en-Jalles station died on Tuesday while responding to a vegetation fire near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport. Their fire engine was engulfed by flames in a pine forest. While colleagues continued to fight the blaze, a day began for the families, the station and an entire region for which there are no prepared words.The victims were named as Will Schmitter and Anthony Berthome.
