Marseille – 23 July 2026: A police officer was seriously injured during the night of 21 July in Marseille’s 10th arrondissement after a driver refused to stop. According to consistent reports, the officer was struck by a fleeing car and thrown several metres. The news from southern France describes an operation that turned from a traffic check into a serious accident within seconds.
The incident reportedly began late in the evening of 20 July, shortly before midnight. Police officers wanted to check a Peugeot 208 that, according to media reports, was travelling without licence plates. The vehicle initially did not stop. During a further attempt, an officer from an intervention unit deployed a mobile roadblock to stop the vehicle.
The collision occurred in the process. The police officer was struck by the car and seriously injured. No further details about his exact condition were initially made public. What is certain is that the officer required medical treatment. For his colleagues, the case is another indication of the risks that traffic checks can entail when drivers ignore orders to stop.
The four occupants left the vehicle after the collision and initially fled on foot. Officers from the Brigade anticriminalité in southern Marseille arrested them shortly afterwards. According to the available information, they are between 13 and 18 years old. The 18-year-old driver is said not to have held a driving licence.
